Derek Anderson is joining the Arizona Cardinals knowing he begins as the backup quarterback to Matt Leinart with a chance to push for the starting job. Anderson, released by the Cleveland Browns, agreed to a two-year deal. Leinart had been the only quarterback on Arizona’s roster following the retirement of Kurt Warner.

Free-agent quarterback Rex Grossman signed a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins on Wednesday. Grossman spent last season with the Houston Texans, where he worked with new Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan held the same position with the Texans and now will be an assistant to his father, new Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan.

NFL mulling 2 possessions in playoffs OT (AP)

NFL owners will vote next week whether to allow each team a possession in overtime in the playoffs if the team winning the OT coin toss kicks a field goal on the first series. Previously, the game would end whenever either side scores, as happened in the NFC championship game in January, with New Orleans beating Minnesota on Garrett Hartley’s kick.

Volatile but versatile Richie Incognito is joining the Miami Dolphins, who gave the free-agent offensive lineman a one-year contract and a fresh start Wednesday. Incognito has conceded he has a reputation for being “a less than model citizen,” but the Dolphins are counting on him to provide more depth and flexibility up front.

Bills sign DE Edwards to 4-year deal (AP)

Free agent defensive end Dwan Edwards has signed a four-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. The team announced the deal Wednesday. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press early Wednesday morning that the contract potentially is worth $18 million. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced by the Bills.

Bears release former Pro Bowl DB Vasher (AP)

The Chicago Bears have released former Pro Bowl defensive back Nathan Vasher. Vasher, selected in the fourth round of the 2004 draft out of Texas, played six seasons with Chicago and made 19 interceptions, including eight in 2005 when he was picked for the Pro Bowl. Vasher’s play dropped off the last several seasons and he was slowed by injuries.

Free agent safety Sean Jones has agreed to a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team announced the deal Wednesday. Jones played for Philadelphia last season after spending the first five years of his career with the Cleveland Browns. He started nine games with the Eagles, finishing with 72 tackles, one sack and two interceptions.

Quarterback Jake Delhomme completed his visit to Cleveland last week and drove to the airport for a flight to New Orleans. He never made it. Travel delays forced Delhomme to return to Charlotte, N.C., where he chose to sign with the Browns without visiting his hometown Saints. The chance to start was more important than being a backup in his home state.
